Through the years Sonny Liston occasionally filled in bit roles in motion pictures, invariably portraying mean, surly bad guys, an image he had conveyed to his opponents and the public.
Actually, Sonny was hardly "mean and surly." He wasn't too talkative, usually limiting his answers to curt "yeahs" and "noes." On occasion, however, he could be a pleasant conversationalist.
Aside from his wife, Geraldine, Sonny's main interests in life were youth programs, his interest stemming from his own impoverished and underprivileged childhood in Arkansas.
Sonny never learned to read, and his writing was confined to his name. But his fists earned him nearly $4,000,000 in paydays during his exciting, if erratic, career.
